Guaranteed way to get ANY Job Part 1: The Research

The first part in this series is the Research.


Step 1:

Decide EXACTLY what kind of work you want to do. This is the first and most important step because it defines the rest of the process. Here, you must analyse yourself: What are your capabilities and talents? What kind of job do you see yourself doing? What are you good at and enjoy doing? Are you good with your hands and fixing things? Then, maybe you’ll excel as a Mechanic or even in Construction! Or maybe you already have a job in mind? Marketing Manager at a Telecommunications company, an Accountant or Cashier at a supermarket? The idea is to figure out what you are good at, so that you know what you can OFFER your prospective employer. Once you have a clear grasp of what you can do, plan ways of communicating the advantages, ideas, services and developments you believe you can successfully deliver to the company (that’s your value)

Step 2:

Choose the company or person you wish to work for.  Who do you want to work with? Create a list of the organisations that you are most interested in. Keep in mind the things you are good at when making this list. “I want to be a Mechanic at Quality Services Limited”. “I want to be the Marketing Manager at Digicel”. You get the idea?

Step 3:

Study your prospective employer. There are few things more embarrassing than being asked what you know about company at your interview and not being able to answer! HUGE faux pas! Even before you apply, research the company’s policies, history, hierarchy, the chances of advancement within the company (unless the position you wish to obtain doesn’t need for advancement). Make sure you at least find out the name of the General Manager, or the person who will be your immediate boss.


Step 4:

Once you have a plan in mind, Create a C.V. (see Guaranteed way to get any Job Part 2: The Resume coming soon)  and direct it

Step 5:

Give your C.V. to the proper person with the authority to hire you (see step 3).

Step 6:

Follow up! If you have not heard back from your prospective employer after a week or two, it is important to follow up with them, by sending a polite email. This is important because it serves as a gentle reminder and it also shows genuine interest and enthusiasm for the job.
